Beroun and neighbourhood
BerounBeroun (Werone in Latin, Beraun in German) is a district town in Central Bohemia which is located between two important cities - Pilsen and Prague. The town is situated at the junction of Berounka and Litavka about 18km southeast of Prague. Because of its strategic location Beroun has been an important crossroads since Middle Age, a place of trade and production. Since the introduction of the fast connection with Prague (highway D5) Beroun has become a satellite city of the Czech metropolis. Beroun is located in a beautiful hilly area on the border of the Bohemian Karst and Křivoklátsko. Together with its historical monuments this is the reason why Beroun represents an important initial point for touristic trails.
PraguePrague is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Historical town centre with a unique panorama of Prague Castle, the largest castle complex in the world, is one of the UNESCO monuments. The historic centre and a lot of other sights attract every year hundreds of thousands of tourists from countries all over the world.
Svatý Jan pod SkalouSvatý Jan pod Skalou is one of the most picturesque villages of the national natural reservation Czech Karst. It flows with many natural beauties and you can find there a lot of historic monuments. The beginning of its history is dated back to the end of the 9th century when the first Czech Christian hermit Ivan settled in a cave under a massive rock wall according to the legend. Ivan who was venerated as a saint lived in the local travertine caves which are still conserved.
Koněprusy cavesKoněprusy caves are located in the Central Bohemia in the heart of the Bohemian Karst, full of picturesque places and forked rocks. Koněprusy caves are opened to the public since 1959 and they offer to the visitors a tour around the cave floors (approximately an hour) which originate from the water activity in 400mil.-year-old limestone. The sightseeing trail goes through the cave halls around several houses with stalactite decoration and ends in the upper floor of the caves where coins were secretly made in the 15th century.
The castle of KřivoklátThe castle of Křivoklát is one of the most important and oldest royal castles in the Czech Republic. It was probably Wenceslas I who started with construction of a stone castle in the mid-13th century. It gained a great importance above all under Wenceslas’ son Přemysl Otakar II. The castle was also a favourite place to stay for Charles IV who spent there his childhood. Every summer there is a rich cultural program – concerts, theatre shows, swordsmen, artists, programs for children.
Karlštejn castleThe Flamboyant castle founded in 1348 has among Czech castles a very exceptional position. I was established by the Bohemian king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV as a location for the royal treasure, the collection of the holy relics and imperial crown jewels in particular. In 1355 Charles IV stayed at the castle and supervised the finishing of the building and the interior decorating of the castle chapel in the main. The construction was finished in 1365 when the Chapel of St. Cross in the Great Tower was consecrated.
